See Your Way to Better Winter Driving

Temperatures are dropping and winter is definitely upon us. With the first real frosts of the season comes the unpleasant task of clearing ice from car windows. For some drivers clearing all of the windows is far too cold and too much of a bother so only a narrow band across the windscreen gets cleared. Don't fall into this trap! Go out to the car a few minutes earlier and spend some time clearing all of the windows to give yourself the best visibility possible.

Here are some top tips:

  • Stock up on de-icer to help with stubborn ice
  • Clear all of the windows, mirrors and be sure that lights are visible
  • Lift the wiper blades carefully so they aren't frozen in place
  • Use de-icer spray or warm the key to unfreeze any door locks
  • Put the right mixture of screenwash in the car and clear the nozzles when you're clearing the windows
  • Don't leave the engine running in order to melt the ice - this will take time, wasting fuel and damaging the environment
  • Don't use boiling water to defrost the windows and if using warm water beware of ice forming where it runs off the car
