Frequently Asked Questions

1) Where can I find details of future Route 60+ courses?

Details of all upcoming courses are listed on the events page of the Somerset Road Safety website.

2) What training do you provide in schools?

Schools education and training operates at several levels:

Road Safety Talks and Pedestrian Training

Presentations are provided after receiving requests from schools. These deliver road safety education to pupils aged 5 years and above. This can be followed by pedestrian training on the roads surrounding the premises.

Cycle Training

Cycle training is split into two formats:

RoSPA – run by staff/parents wishing to deliver a cycle course at their school. It involves a Road Safety Trainer who will attend the school to deliver ‘Tutor’ training to the Staff/Parents. The tutors then run the course to fit in with either the school program, or out of school activity, (each session to be minimum of two hours). Certificates are provided on completion of course.

Bikeability – The National Standard cycle training scheme, delivered by Road Safety Cycle Instructors over a two-day period.

All of the above courses are arranged via schools. If a school does not provide cycle training – some sports centres provide courses during school holidays.

3) How can schools find out about the education programmes you offer?

Anyone requiring more information can find details on our website or they can ring 01823 423430

4) Who pays for training in schools?

All road safety training programmes held in schools are financed from public funds as part of the Education and Training budget. (A nominal charge may be made for cycle training if an instructor has to be brought in because volunteers cannot be recruited). However, it is unlikely that a child would be denied training due to financial restrictions.

5) Do you provide any training for special needs schools?

Yes, we have a programme suitable for children and adults with special needs or learning difficulties. It is called “Step in the Right Direction”, and is a highly praised training package with DVDs designed to help them cross roads safely.
