Our aim is to achieve lasting reductions in the number of collisions and casualties on Somerset roads. Our first priority is to reduce casualties in line with the Government targets which were, at the end of 2010:

• 35 per cent reduction in fatal and serious road casualties
• 50 per cent reduction in child road casualties
• Maintain slight casualties at the 2002-2004 average

These targets were achieved at the end of the period. Targets for 2020 are in the process of being determined both nationally and locally. Whilst these targets have yet to be agreed, Somerset Road Safety seeks to continue the downward trend in casualties.

Somerset Accident Data Statistics

Comparison of casualty statistics for the months January to September 2010 and 2011 yielded the following results:

  • Fatal casualties were reduced by 32%
  • Number of people (all age groups) killed or seriously injured decreased by 18%
  • Powered two wheeler riders or passengers killed or seriously injured, decreased by 23%
  • Number of children killed or seriously injured fell by 21%
  • In the 16-24 year age group, the number of people killed or seriously injured rose by 29% from 35 in 2010 to 45 in 2011
  • Vehicle drivers accounted for 20 of these 16-24 year old casualties in 2011, an increase of 9 casualties (82%) when compared with the 2010 figure
  • The number of people killed or seriously injured in the 60+ age group fell by 28% in 2011
