Somerset Road Safety is committed to reducing the numbers of collisions and casualties on the county’s roads by promoting safer driving through education and road safety campaigns.
Somerset Road Safety was initially formed as a partnership in 2006 to bring together the extensive experience and expertise from a number of organisations to drive down casualty rates, create safer communities and improve the quality of life for all residents and visitors to Somerset.
The partners included Somerset County Council, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, NHS Trusts, Highways Agency and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary together with driving and safety organisations such as ROSPA, IAM, Driving Standards Agency and the Driving Instructors Association. To accomodate the way in which these organisations have evolved recently, Somerset Road Safety now represents the work of Somerset County Council's road safety team, working in partnership with the various organisations.
Somerset Road Safety places great emphasis on education. A wide range of programmes promoting an understanding of traffic and road safety issues are available for young people, from pre-school to those in sixth form and further education colleges.
The immediate aim of these programmes is to help to ensure the safety of pupils as pedestrians and cyclists but they should also make them better, and safer, riders and drivers in later life.
